My Current Hero

I just came across an interview with my current favorite religious thinker, Jeffery Kripal.  Some of you may have heard me talking about him.  I call him my hero because I think his writing is in many ways heroic in its aim to dramatically change the way we think about religion and religious experience.  I'm currently reading the book that is mentioned, and its every bit as interesting as it sounds.  Enjoy!

  1. Thanks! This is a fantastic interview with a very unusual thinker. What he suggests is radical, yes, but most important, he seems to demand that we start thinking differently about so-called 'subjective' experiences that are not 'real.' 'Reality' has been so permanently defined by our particular time, culture, ruling parties/ideologies, etc. that we are long overdue to think beyond our comfy structures. However, who is really ready for this?--as he questions in The Serpent's Gift. Maybe only a few, for the time being. There will be a shift in thinking over time, but there will be much resistance. Maybe too much, and his gnostic texts will be thrown in a cave for thousands of years like the Nag Hammadi texts. Sure hope not! He has so many delicious things to say!

  2. I agree that his thought is very important, at least to me. I think few are ever ready for any real jump, but I think that's always the case, and I wouldn't be surprised if it always was. I personally think where on the verge of a major shift in religion, but it might take a few hundred years to be common knowledge. These changes are often only clear in hindsight.
